The mightiest tanks in Hills of Steel do not roll on treads, they walk on legs as the Scorpion, Kong, Kraken, Rex, and the mythic Valkyrie.

Superplus Games is the studio behind Hills of Steel since the original Android release in 2017, and the title is now part of the Supercharge family after the 2025 acquisition. The game sits in the 2D physics-based tank action category, where you drive side-scrolling armored vehicles across hilly battlefields, fire on enemy tanks, helicopters and bosses, and grab loot to upgrade your roster. Version 8.7.1 runs on Android 6.0 and up, packs the build into under 200 MB, and offers four core modes: Adventure, Survival, Versus PvP, and a rotating weekly event tab. Free to play, fully offline outside the Versus modes, and currently published under the Supercharge Mobile Corp label.

The 26+ tank roster split across five rarity tiers, Cobra to Valkyrie

Hills of Steel runs more than 25 unique tanks split across five rarity tiers, each tier holding its own price floor and unlock path through chests, gem packs and event drops.

The Common tier is where every player starts. Cobra is the default free unlock, a straight-firing tracked tank with balanced HP and a single-shot cannon that doubles as the tutorial vehicle. Joker trades raw damage for fire rate, unloading shells nearly twice as fast as Cobra but with thinner armor. Titan flips that trade-off, packing the highest HP and damage in the Common tier together with the slowest turn speed and the worst hill climb. Phoenix replaces the standard shell with a spread of burning projectiles that apply a damage-over-time burn, and Ballista lobs arcing explosive bombs with knockback that flip lighter tanks on the spot.

Epic tanks layer a unique mechanic on top of the base stats. Flak is an anti-air specialist with an adjustable turret angle that fires bursts of three exploding shrapnel rounds, built to drop helicopters in Desert and fighter jets in Jungle. Battery adds chained electric damage between nearby enemies, while older Epics like Atlas, Tesla and Mammoth combine stealth missiles, lightning bursts, and brute-force shells.

Legendary is where the game moves off treads entirely. The four Legendary entries (Scorpion, Kong, Kraken and Rex) are all walker frames with multi-leg pathing that ignores hill physics, each carrying its own signature attack: Scorpion strikes with a tail stinger, Kong slams the ground with a club, Kraken spawns tentacles, and Rex chomps with a jaw bite. Maxing a single Legendary from Level 1 to Level 15 costs 33,600 coins in total, climbing from 60 coins at Level 2 up to 6,300 coins at Level 15.

Mythic is currently a single-tank tier holding Valkyrie, added in version 6.5.0 as the rarest pull from gem chests and ranked Versus path rewards.

Adventure, Survival, Versus PvP and Commander Mode side by side

The roster goes to work across four main modes and a rotating event calendar, and progression in one mode unlocks rewards in the others.

Adventure Mode is the solo campaign that ships with every install. Each level is a side-scrolling run from left to right against waves of enemy tanks, helicopters and mech bosses, ending in a coin payout and a chance at a chest drop. Progress through Adventure also unlocks the other modes and the higher-priced world maps. Coin rewards per Adventure level typically sit between 50 and 300 depending on difficulty, with a free chest cooldown that resets every 3 hours.

Survival Mode is the endurance test. The map scrolls sideways like Adventure, but enemy waves keep coming and the destroyed-tank count decides the score. After each boss kill in Survival, the game drops a repair crate that restores a chunk of HP, and any unused boosters carry over into the next round. Higher Survival stages are locked behind one-time coin payments, with later stages dropping richer coin rewards to offset the upfront cost.

Versus Mode is the live PvP arena and the focus of the latest updates. It now splits into three sub-modes:

  • 1v1: a random-pair duel that runs roughly 60 seconds, where the player who deals more damage at the buzzer takes the rank points
  • 2v2: team format that supports clan-mate parties or random partner fill, with combined damage decided per side
  • Commander Mode: a strategy variant where you and the opponent sit at opposite ends of the map and spend passive coin income on tanks that auto-march toward the enemy base, with one-off plays like a carpet bombing run priced at a premium coin cost

Boss Rush, Be the Boss, Clash on Titan and weekly tournaments rotate on the event tab, each with its own leaderboard, chest path and one-shot tank skin as the climb reward.

Repair Kit to Napalm: the 11-booster system across three rarities

Each tank loads up to two boosters before a match starts, drawn from an 11-booster pool that splits into three rarity tiers, with stats reworked in the 4.5 patch to scale by rarity.

The Common boosters are the bread-and-butter picks for early Adventure and Survival runs:

  • Repair Kit: drops a healing crate from the sky that restores a chunk of max HP on pickup, the easiest stabilizer on long Survival ladders
  • Circular Saw: rolls a buzzsaw out in front of the tank that grinds enemy HP on contact, useful as a melee finisher when the standard cannon cannot angle low enough
  • Mine: drops a proximity charge that detonates on enemy contact, the cleanest way to break a chasing group in 2v2
  • Force Shield: wraps the tank in a damage-absorbing bubble for a short window, the standard pick into boss fights and tail-end Survival waves

Rare boosters trade slower charge times for stronger output. Airstrike calls down a parachuted missile that hits a single ground target for high damage, while Shockwave fires a horizontal AoE pulse that pushes nearby enemies back and stuns wheeled tanks for about a second. Healing Drone hovers above the tank and trickles HP back over an extended window, the better pick against Survival ladders where one big heal cannot last to the next boss.

Epic boosters are the late-game power tools. Napalm scorches a stretch of ground in front of the tank with a damage-over-time burn that stacks with Phoenix’s native burn. Rapid Reload cuts the cannon cooldown of the equipped tank for a short window, the highest single-burst damage pick in 1v1. Missile Drone parks a guided launcher above the tank that fires homing missiles independent of manual aim. Double Damage flat-doubles cannon damage for a short window, the simplest pick into Kraken bosses or any Boss Rush wave past tier 5.

Each booster carries a card-collection upgrade path with gem costs per level, raising duration, damage or radius depending on the booster type.

Summer, Snow, Desert and four other Journey Mode worlds

Adventure and Versus levels both pull from a roster of seven progressive worlds, each gated by a one-time coin unlock and each adding its own enemy types and terrain hazards.

The starting world is the Summer countryside, a green-hills map unlocked at zero cost with the default basic tracked enemies. Snow is the second world at 3,000 coins, swapping the grass for icy slopes that reduce tank traction, and adding grenade-throwing infantry that arc explosives over hills. Desert is unlocked for 5,000 coins, adds rocky dunes and brings in helicopters as the first flying enemy class, which forces an anti-air booster pick or a Flak tank loadout.

Jungle costs 7,000 coins and is the most visually dense of the historical worlds, with thick vine cover, dropping log traps and fighter jets that strafe in low passes. The Moon is the first sci-fi world at 9,000 coins, where the lower gravity changes shell trajectories noticeably and laser-firing alien tanks join the enemy pool. Mars carries the lower-gravity physics from the Moon and adds hovering UFO enemies that fire laser beams downward, which means high-arc Ballista shots become less reliable and direct-fire tanks like Cobra and Joker scale better.

Space City is the newest world, added in the 2026 update path alongside Moon and Mars as part of the expanded Journey Mode. The map is a vertical orbital station with floating platforms instead of hills, and replaces ground enemies with anti-gravity scout drones and turret bunkers fixed to the platform edges.

Every world also has a night variant that adds low-light visuals and tougher enemy spawn tables in Versus mode, alongside four new traps (TNT, Rocket Bunker, Machine Gun Bunker and Flamethrower Bunker) that sit on level paths and shoot at any tank that rolls within range.

What’s new in Hills of Steel version 8.7.1

Version 8.7.1 is the latest Hills of Steel build for Android. The package runs at roughly 188 MB and requires Android 6.0 or higher.

The headline change is the full rebuild of Versus mode. The PvP tab now splits into three selectable sub-modes (1v1 duels, 2v2 team battles, and Commander Mode strategy matches), each with its own rank path. The new rank ladder grants progression rewards including coins, gems, chest drops and exclusive tank skins at every tier of the climb, which replaces the old single-track Versus score.

The 2026 update path also extended Journey Mode with three new worlds. Moon, Mars and Space City joined the original four worlds (Summer, Snow, Desert and Jungle), expanding the total Adventure roster to seven and adding the orbital platform map to the rotation.

Build quality fixes in version 8.7.1 cover two long-standing complaints from the official Discord and the game’s fan page: Arena reward claims that previously failed silently on Common chest and gem pulls are now reliable, and Epic and Mythic path reward claims have been patched to deliver the correct cards.

Smaller polish items in this version: the Versus matchmaking timer was tightened, the booster select screen no longer mis-displays the Napalm icon over other booster slots, and frame-rate drops on rain-effect levels for the rocket-class tanks were reduced.

Hills of Steel is currently published under the Supercharge Mobile Corp label following the 2025 transfer from Superplus Games, with the next content cadence previewed on the official Discord.

Hills of Steel MOD APK features

The Hills of Steel MOD APK strips out the coin and gem economy that gates the 26-tank roster, the booster upgrade ladder and the seven world maps, aimed at players who want to push straight to Legendary walkers and Mythic Valkyrie without grinding Adventure for chest drops.

Unlimited Coins

The standard coin counter stays at the maximum instead of the usual 50 to 300 coin payout per Adventure level. With coins no longer the bottleneck, unlocking Snow (3,000 coins), Desert (5,000), Jungle (7,000), Moon (9,000), Mars and Space City all happens on day one. Coin-cost tank level-ups also become free, including the 33,600 coins needed to max a Legendary tank like Kong or Kraken from Level 1 to Level 15, and the higher Survival stage purchases that normally sit behind a steep coin wall.

Unlimited Gems

Gems normally trickle in through daily missions, ad rewards and Versus rank chests, and are the only currency that buys premium chests, unlocks booster card jumps and skips the in-app purchase wall. The MOD caps the gem counter at maximum, which means every gem-cost booster upgrade for Force Shield, Napalm, Double Damage and the other eight boosters can ramp straight to Level 10 without waiting on card pulls from Adventure chests.

All Tanks Unlocked

The full 26+ tank roster including the four Legendaries (Scorpion, Kong, Kraken and Rex) and the Mythic Valkyrie is unlocked from the first load, with no chest pull or event run required. In the stock APK, Valkyrie typically sits behind multiple Mythic path completions plus ranked Versus climbs, and a Legendary like Kraken needs both gem-cost chest pulls and the 33,600-coin level grind. The MOD also unlocks the Epic skin variants such as the Anniversary Titan and the futuristic Atlas, Tesla and Mammoth color swaps.

God Mode (Invincibility)

The tank’s HP bar no longer ticks down under enemy fire, which is the highest-impact change in Boss Rush and in Survival ladders past wave 30, where Kraken-class bosses output multi-hit damage rotations that normally end a run inside two minutes. Paired with Rapid Reload, the loadout clears the typical Be the Boss event tier inside a single attempt and turns Commander Mode against bots into a one-sided economy push.

No Ads

The forced interstitial after every Adventure loss and the rewarded-ad gates for daily chests, booster cards and gem packs are all removed. Stock Hills of Steel typically serves an interstitial ad every two to three minutes during heavy Adventure sessions, with extra video walls before booster claim and chest opens, so cutting them out shortens a 10-level Adventure block by several minutes.

Frequently asked questions about Hills of Steel

Is the Hills of Steel MOD APK safe to install on Android?

The MOD modifies the stock client to enable God Mode, unlimited coins and unlimited gems, which means it cannot pass the Supercharge server-side checks tied to the live Versus modes. It runs cleanly in Adventure, Survival and Boss Rush. A secondary Google account is the standard precaution when testing Versus, since the live PvP environment can flag the modified balance.

Will the MOD get my account banned from Versus mode?

Versus is the only mode that touches the live leaderboard and ranked path. Versus matchmaking checks for impossible balance jumps, such as a Level 1 account fielding a maxed Valkyrie at 6,300-coin equivalent stats, and accounts running that profile are typically dropped from the season’s rank rewards. Adventure, Survival, Boss Rush and Commander against bots are server-light and not flagged.

Does the MOD work with the version 8.7.1 Journey Mode worlds?

Yes. The MOD covers all seven worlds from Summer to Space City, with the three 2026 additions (Moon, Mars and Space City) fully unlocked on first launch and the orbital platform physics for Space City working as in the stock build. The Versus rank rewards added in 8.7.1, including the new tier-by-tier coin, gem and skin drops, are also auto-claimable through the modded client.

Can I switch between the MOD and the stock APK without losing tank progress?

No. The MOD writes to its own local save file separate from the stock APK’s cloud sync. Installing one over the other usually triggers a fresh save, so any maxed-out Legendary or Mythic tank from the stock account stays on the Supercharge servers, while the MOD progress lives only on the current install and is wiped if the modded APK is removed.

Does Hills of Steel work fully offline in the MOD version?

Adventure, Survival, Boss Rush and the booster upgrade lab all work offline in both the stock and the modded APK. The Versus modes (1v1, 2v2 and Commander), the daily chest timer and the event tab need an active connection in either version, since match data, opponent profiles and event payouts pull from the Supercharge servers.
